#CASTLEDRONE | FAR OUT features Brooklyn-based painters Jennifer J. Lee and Dana Powell. Paintings that are united by their quality of paint, in texture and playfulness in imagery.
Jennifer J. Lee’s imagery draws towards her own nostalgia, pre-internet memories of a 90s youth and Generation X hippie storylines. Her process reflects an affection for the net as a breeding ground of possibility, making her easel paintings plein air style in a windowless room, referencing images off a computer screen. Working on the rough texture of jute, Lee transforms these digital images into significant form, her materials affirming their objecthood; their place in our realm. Lee is originally from Pittsburgh, PA holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and a MFA from Rhode Island School of Design.
Dana Powell’s paintings are images of meditation on life, sex, decay and desire. Her painterly, stream-of-consciousness approach presents an openness to the work, permitting interruptions and accidents to further develop her ideas. She works from imagination, starting from a glimpse of something once seen in her experience or in a dream and builds on this as the painting progresses. She refreshingly takes on representation that is as expressive as it is solidly built. Dana Powell from Milwaukee, Wisconsin attended Cooper Union where she received a BFA in 2015.
